Senator Helen Coonan’s Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts has issued a request for tender to replace its ageing PABX system with an IP system.

However, according to the report by The Australian, the Department is falling short of buying into the whole convergence push and is stipulating that the voice and data networks must remain separate.

Yet on the other hand, integration with the PC desktop is a priority.

According to the report network management must be integrated with the existing all-Cisco data architecture and will include 950 IP handsets at four Canberra sites, along with network infrastructure and software.

Bids close on the 8th of May with an announcement due less than two weeks late by May 19.
