Press reports indicate that Pacific Internet VP for Thailand, Supachot Kanjanakontong, has revealed that the company has entered into a marketing agreement with callthai.net to provide a VoIP service.

The service will be offered via softphones initially followed by a USB phone and ultimately the company plans to also offer a pre-paid card.

Earlier this year, Thailand’s National Telecommunication Commission liberalised the regulation for VoIP services from PCs to fixed line phone, but a ban on phone-to-phone VoIP remains in place to protect state-owned carriers.

Kanjanakontong also reportedly confirmed that the company was working on a new strategy to shift its focus from standard Internet services to offering Internet Protocol-based communication solutions such as VoIP and WiMAX.

Pacific Internet recently announced trials of a mobile WiMax service in Singapore, however, Thai telecom authorities are yet to allocate and frequencies for WiMAX.
