In an effort to reduce cost, simplify management and improve services West Australian aged care provider, Anglican Homes, has commissioned a converged IP communications network covering 19 sites.

To merge the organisation’s voice and data networks, Nortel channel partner Converged Networks is putting together a million dollar network infrastructure which will link each site to the Anglican Homes’ head office via DSL.

There High-density Gigabit network will provide future ability to deliver Power over Ethernet (PoE) to every desktop.

The solution is a complete forklift upgrade of the entire voice and data network, adding Nortel's BCM for the voice and WAN routing, Ethernet Routing Switches and Nortel 2300 series wireless LAN and Voice-over-WLAN (VoWLAN) handsets. The network also incorporates elements of the organisation's legacy infrastructure.

"Our goal from the start was to upgrade the separate voice and data networks, which consisted of a variety of vendors' equipment, and to implement a common framework for all voice, data, and multimedia services to take advantage of converging technologies as industry standards become established," said Peter Mildenhall, IT manager, Anglican Homes.

"A major focus was integrating our existing systems such as Nurse Call, Paging and Fire Alarms, and then delivering new services such as text messaging and alerts directly to the Voice over IP (VoIP) handsets connected to the wireless LAN," said Mildenhall.

"This allows staff to carry a single device for all communications regardless of which site they're on."

"Many companies see the benefits of moving to IP, but are held back by substantial investments in (largely incompatible) legacy equipment. We're circumventing the problem with hybrid technology that allows our technology partners to build solutions that migrate their customers to IP at their own pace, and offer a better overall solution than they would get with an IP-only installation," said Nick Avakian, general manager, Enterprise Networks, Australia and New Zealand, Nortel.
