In a move that will see number two carrier Optus Communications do a mind meld on its IP Core and Edge Networks, the company has selected fast growing Juniper Networks as its partner.

According to Industry research company IDC, Juniper Networks led the 2005
Australian core routing market with an impressive 82 percent share by revenue.

Siemens Australia will do the hard yards deploying the new hardware.

Juniper says the network will service both business and residential customers. Optus will deploy the Juniper M320 Multiservice Platform as it builds out a network to carry advanced IP-based services including Voice, Video, Data and VPN.

"After an extensive evaluation, Optus selected the Juniper solution, supplied by Siemens, for its reliability, scalability and performance," said Bill Hope, Managing Director Optus Networks.

Multiple M320s will be configured to provide both core and edge routing functions on a single system. This approach will enable Optus to realise significant deployment and operational cost savings as compared to scenarios where core and edge routing must be provided by separate systems, Juniper said in a statement.

"Our M-series platform delivers low total cost of ownership without compromise in performance or reliability," said Shaun Page, Vice President of Australia and New Zealand for Juniper Networks. "The powerful, versatile features of the M320 are ideal for service providers such as Optus who are consolidating their infrastructure into a single network capable of supporting a wide range of highly scalable IP-based services today and tomorrow."

Siemens Australia Communications Executive Director, Paul Lazarou, in acknowledging the significance of the project, said the Juniper collaboration on the new IP core and edge would enable Optus to provide additional competing services to an ever demanding market.

The M320 is a highly scalable, secure and reliable 320 Gigabits per second capable routing platform supporting 10 Gigabits per second interfaces.
