A system to enable Skype features such as message alerts and
caller ID on standard television sets was announced by a London-based company
called Oregan Networks.
The company, a software developer that specialises in
embedded solutions for cable companies and consumer electronics brands - that is
to say it makes software for set top boxes - is in the process of building a
system that will offer full Skype functionality from your arm chair.
For the moment though, the system would allow a user to be
alerted to an incoming caller or message, see their caller ID and either dismiss
the call or send a standard response. It doesn't let you take the call.
The system has not been Skype Certified and the company
reportedly did not collaborate with the peer-to-peer phone company to develop
the system.
The Skype functionality is part of the company's Media
Browser software which incorporates a TV browser, IPTV client and a DLNA player
and server and is based on open standards for web content authoring and
distribution.
The company says the delivery of Skype applications on TV is
in line with its mission to enable the non-PC market to tap into the advanced
interactivity, "any-time, any-place" connectivity and fresh dynamic
content - through Internet technologies.
