The respective members of ACIF, SPAN and the already subsumed AVOIPA will now all pool their collective wisdom and bargaining power under the one banner - The Communications Alliance.

Back in May, ADIF and AVOIPA decided to do the mind meld thing and then not long after, SPAN, the Service Providers Association also fell into line agreeing to put it to members that their interests would be better served as a united force.

The respective members of ACIF and SPAN have now had their chance to vote and the new peak body for the Australia's communications industry is ready for launch on September 1.

From that date the new Alliance will be governed by a transitional board, co-chaired by current ACIF chairman Neville Stevens and SPAN chairman John Kranenburg. Both will be non-executive roles.

ACIF CEO Anne Hurley has already been confirmed as CEO and will take responsibility for managing the business and operations of the new body.

A newly elected board will commence on December 1 and will elect its own chair.

But not before everybody has a chance to celebrate the new union when the industry comes together for the SPAN 2006 Annual Dinner on August 31.

What will be the most broadly representative body in the history of the Australian communications industry, will provide a powerful and unified voice to lead the transition to the next generation networks (NGN) era, says the announcement.

"Our industry is undergoing an almost total transformation and it will require unparalleled cooperation between all sectors to ensure an orderly transition," ACIF's Anne Hurley said.

"By bringing the industry together under the Communications Alliance we can muster all of the brain-power, resources and expertise we will need to handle this challenging time in our history."
