A new wireless Skype phone that works with both PC and Mac
will begin shipping this month from Keyspan.
The US$79 cordless VoIP phone supports Caller ID and Speed
Dial for both Skype and Skype Out numbers, it does not support PSTN calling.
A single button on the phone opens and closes the Skype
application on your PC or Mac while an LCD display shows who is online as well
as status information for talk time and signal quality.
The phones rechargeable batteries are refreshed via USB and provide
standby time of up to 1200 hours and talk time of up to 15 hours, according to
Keyspan.
"Keyspan's Cordless VoIP Phone lets you use Skype
anywhere in your home or office," noted Mike Ridenhour, president of
Keyspan.
"And, you can also take the Keyspan Cordless VoIP Phone on the
road, to use in hotels, airports and cafes, as long as you have an Internet
connection and are within range of your laptop."
Like other cordless Skype phones (VoIP News has a Linksys
CIT200 that operates in a similar manner) the phone comes with a receiver that
plugs into the USB port on a PC or a Mac.
This cordless receiver communicates with the Skype phone
over a 2.4 Ghz radio signal just the same as many cordless DECT phones already
in use with fixed line services.
Like the Linksys device, the Skype phone communicates with
the Skype client running on the PC/Mac so your computer must be up and running
for the system to work.
