Top 30 Blogger List Downs Site Print E-mail

Don't you just hate it when you miss out on a great opportunity. You know like the million dollar home page. Well this idea is not quite as good as that, but I'm impressed all the same. I've been thinking recently about the increase in the number of headlines on the web that promise 10 of this, 7 of that.

As a professional journalist, you notice headlines a little more than the average punter and the rapid increase in "list" headlining is no doubt due to the SEO advice doing the rounds at the moment. I think I first saw it on SitePro News, but I don't actually recall.

The idea is that list headlines sell and are a great way for amateur writers to attract attention even if the content is mediocre [oops! That's a little harsh. Actually I'm just jealous of all that traffic].

You know headlines like; Ten Questions To Consider Before Selecting An IP Phone, or Three things You Didn't Know About Journalism, or The Top One Way To Show You're An Amateur, that sort of thing.

Naturally once word got around that list headlines sell, they've exploded into cyberspace. Keep an eye out and I bet you will start seeing them everywhere.

Seriously, I wouldn't stoop to such tactics, well not often. Actually, if I was half as smart as Garrett Smith, author of the Smith on VoIP blog I would have come up with his idea and if I had I would have done it.

You see Garreth put together a list of the top 30 VoIP blogs and published them on his own blog.

Well talk about link bait! Talk about smart!

Struck by pride and vanity, he was immediately linked by a whole heap of the premier VoIP bloggers world wide. His Google backlink ratings would have been heroically improved.

The story was Dugg, Del.icio.us'ed burned and borrowed until the huge traffic spike finally caused the company that host's Smith's Blog to take it off the air.

He's back on air intermittently now but, Garreth, that was Genius, Pure Genius.
