Residents of the United Kingdom can now sign up to access Mobiboo, the country's first commercial VoIP over Wi-Fi hotspot operation.

The company is launching the service using the newly released UTStarcom F3000 clamshell WiFi handset and the Mobiboo Dashboard - a softphone which is also capable of instant messaging.

"The cost-savings of VoIP have already been proven by companies such as Skype. Mobiboo has gone one step further to replicate a true mix of traditional mobile, DECT and landline phone services to provide both residential and business customers with a credible alternative, thus giving real value for money." explained Richard Newsome, Commercial Director at Mobiboo.

"In a nut shell, a mobile number, DECT functionality and landline pricing with the additional coverage available with Wi-Fi," he said.

Mobiboo has partnered with The Cloud, a leading European hotspot provider, so the service is available with international roaming.

Subscribers are allocated a UK mobile number in the 07911 range, but before the service even officially launched it has drawn the ire of mobile operators.

A statement on the company's website from June says mobile carriers Hutchison 3 and T-Mobile have barred their customers from calling Mobiboo 07911 phone numbers due to what they say are high charges that incumbent telco BT is charging to interconnect the Mobiboo calls.
