It's been a bit of a wait for neglected Apple Mac users, but Skype's latest beta version of Skype for Mac, version 2.0, introduces video calling. The client allows video calls to other Skype users whether they are on Windows or Mac computers.

Full screen video calls, with a mirror window so they can see
how they look on screen, ought to stem the criticism Skype has had for failing to keep the Mac OS X versions of its client on par with its Windows softphone.

Some Apple users were disappointed, and vocal, when Skype released its 1.5 Beta of Skype for Mac back in July because it failed to bring the client in line with the Windows version.

System requirements for the new client are; Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or newer, a G4, G5, or Intel processor running at a minimum of 800 MHz, 512 MB RAM, 40 MB free disk space, and (of course) an Internet connection.

Stefan Öberg, director of product management for Skype said, "Our community is made up of both Mac and Windows users. We couldn't be more excited to bring these two groups together, literally face-to-face."

The Beta download is available here .

Of course it's Beta, but Skype has made no particular warnings that inexperienced users need to stay away.
