Networking vendor 3Com has announced the availability of its
3108 Wireless VoIP phone for use with WLAN environments for campus-wide mobile IP telephony.
The new wireless phone supports SIP-based communications and
is designed to initially work with the company's NBX VoIP solution. The upscale
3Com VCX systems will support the 3108 wireless phone in early 2007.
Since the phone is SIP compliant, standards-based IP
telephony systems can provide the phone with call control and communication
capabilities.
Priced at US$415, the 3108 supports 802.11b/g and is secured with WPA2 (Wireless
Protected Access 2) protocol and advanced encryption.
The clamshell flip form factor has a colour display and a four-way
joystick cursor like a mobile phone. Users can manage calls, access their
phonebook, view call logs and view e-mails from the device.
Personal settings, such as ring tones, speed dials and
connectivity settings, can be configured on the phone or via a Web
browser-based management tool.
"In today's interactive world, many employees are no
longer spending hours tied to their desks. To be productive, employees have to
be mobile to effectively engage customers, solve problems and collaborate with
partners and other employees," said Brian Allain, vice president and
general manager of 3Com's Data and Voice Business Unit.
"Organizations know the cost savings and business
benefits of VoIP and the flexibility a wireless infrastructure deliver," he said.
"This
phone brings these capabilities together. With 3Com, customers can go to a
single vendor to provide all of the elements of a secure, converged network -
IP Telephony, wireless and data switches, Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS)
and a single service organization to provide support and make sure it all
works."
