A month after mobile VoIP start-up, Mobiboo agreed to merge with Rabbitpoint, the deal has paid off with a contract to supply major retail outfit, Tesco, with a mobile VoIP service.

In addition to the Tesco's deal, the two companies have developed their own brand, tovo, as they prepare to take on the rest of Europe's mobile VoIP market. Mobiboo Mobile CEO, Martin Heath, said the "merger marks the start of great things between our two businesses and we are obviously delighted that we are part of Mobiboo Mobile so soon after launch".

But the deal with Tesco's is a clincher. The retailer now has stores as far a field as China says the average consumer in the UK can save 30% on their mobile charges and up to 50 per cent on their fixed line charges by switching to the tovo service.

Tesco's already has a VoIP offering for regular broadband telephony which Australian listed service provider Freshtel supplies for them. Although Freshtel has been a little slow getting on the mobile VoIP bandwagon despite announcing that it is heading in the direction.

The Mobiboo Mobile services are likely to remain additional to the Freshtel service and complements the company's regular cellular phone offerings.

The service is based around two tovo badged phones - a dual mode GSM/Wi-Fi device the tovo t450g PocketFone and the Wi-Fi only tovo t1000 HomeFone Plus.

Both phones work with Wi-Fi home networks or at Wi-Fi hot spots and are offered on a pay-as-you-go (prepaid) or monthly package. For a basic UK pay-as-you-go package there is no monthly charge and local calls are 2p per minute with international tier 1 calls at 5p per minute, says Tesco. Monthly package customers get free UK, mobile and international calls.

The deals include a regular phone number and with the t450g dual mode phone a regular mobile SIM gives the user the option to make calls using the cellular network if they are out of range of a Wi-Fi connection.

The innovative dual mode handset, t450g, is manufactured for Mobiboo by Pirelli Broadband Solutions and is priced at £159.95.

The tovo t1000 HomeFone Plus handset is manufactured for Mobiboo by UTStarcom, and priced at £79.95. By the way, these prices are less than tovo quotes direct form its site.

The service is initially only being offered in 19 Tesco stores and online from www.tesco.co.uk
