Redback held a Triple Play event for Internet
Service providers in Sydney yesterday, with
another planned for Melbourne
on Monday. Attendees of the educational seminar were warned that network
economics no longer support single service Internet and voice networks.
Bundling data, voice, video and wireless
services is the key to profitability for most broadband service providers in Australia, according to the advice given by
Redback networks at its Sydney
seminar.
Ray Aguilera, country manager for Redback
Networks in Australia explains
how we are seeing three waves of potential growth opportunities for broadband
carriers in Australia.
Triple-play consumer networks for high-speed
Internet, phone and TV: Consolidated business networks for unified communications
and better productivity, and a larger opportunity to invest in broadband
wireless infrastructures, such as WiMAX, to deliver high-speed video and mobility
services for business and consumers, were presented as the key growth and
survivability factors in the local market.
Aggressive competition for consumer
broadband access has put pressure on ISP profitability and network upgrades
driven by three disruptive forces; consolidation, video-centric services, and wireless
broadband services are the order of the day.
"We believe that the next wave of broadband
infrastructure upgrades could be up to ten times bigger than the last Internet build-out
ten years ago," said Aguilera.
"We anticipate that over time, up to 2
billion wireless and wire-line users worldwide may be shifted to multi-service
broadband networks by phone and cable companies. On a worldwide basis, we are looking
for video and mobility to shape network upgrades."
Currently, Redback claims one in five
Internet connections is managed by its routers worldwide, with twelve of the
top 20 telephone carriers using Redback broadband routers to deliver broadband,
phone, TV and mobility services to more than 50 million subscribers worldwide.
