The Australian newspaper’s online edition is reporting that Westpac bank has already switched 800 staff to a new VoIP system.
The bank plans to migrate a further 6000 Sydney staff to the platform before
September according to the report by Kelly Mills.
With a total of 14 CBD offices to get IP handsets before the end of the year, but the big change comes in 2006 when the bank plans to move its Sydney headquarters to VoIP. This will add a further 5000 users to the system.
The rest of the organisation is not on a timeframe for deployment, but the company does intend for this to be an organisation-wide switch.
Cisco won the deal to supply the about half of the 21,000 handsets required for the project and is also providing the supporting network infrastructure, according to Mills. There is an ongoing battle between Cisco and Avaya to secure contracts for the branch network and call centres.
Cisco is working with Telstra, which is obligated to provide IP telephony to Westpac as part of the original $4.3 billion outsourcing arrangement with IBM, signed in 2000, says the story.
