IP Telephony specialist, Avaya, says its new Unified Communications initiatives are just a prelude to solutions that will embed communications within business processes.

The new push comes in the wake of last week's announcement that Avaya will acquire a mobility company called Traverse Networks, a privately held developer of enterprise mobility solutions in California.

The Traverse Networks'' solution set incorporates ways to deliver professional call handling applications and sophisticated voice mail management to mobile devices. It has a voicemail inbox much like an email in-box that displays information such as who the message is from, when it was sent, and message duration.

This week Avaya has teamed that announcement with another which allows enterprise customers to deliver applications to devices

There are a number of versions starting with the Avaya Unified Communications, Essential Edition which targets office-based users who need advanced IP telephony and messaging support and basic conferencing functionality. A Standard Edition for mainstream users, incorporates advanced mobility tools including unified office and mobile communications tools across all major mobile platforms.

Stepping up to the Advanced Edition you get access to more collaboration features where with large teams can use integrated voice and "whiteboard" sessions.

At the top end, the Professional Edition is a solution for strategic communicators which incorporates high-definition video conferences and communications, speech recognition, voice-driven access to messages and other personal applications.

Based on open industry standards and cross-platform protocols, the new solutions will be available in the first half of next year.

But Avaya has so much more planned, the company says its "next wave" of initiatives is a vision for Intelligent Communications, where communications applications are embedded within business processes for "improved service, shorter product cycle times and competitive advantage".

The Traverse solution extends the capabilities of enterprise communications from the desktop, allowing users to control office calls and manage voice mail from a mobile device.

Workers can securely access office voice mail, corporate phone directories, enterprise call management functions and caller ID, simply and easily, on the mobile device of their choice. Traverse provides standards-based, scalable, and secure solutions that extend enterprise communications to a broad range of devices, including RIM Blackberry and Palm handhelds and J2ME-enabled mobile phones.

Avaya said it expects to release solutions integrating Traverse technology in the second half of 2007.
