Taipei's New Public Sector VoIP System Print E-mail

The Taipei City Government has deployed the world's largest public sector VoIP system to allow citizens to make free calls to access services, contact city officials and call schools all free of charge.

The VoIP system integrates similar systems for 163 units under the Taipei City Government, Taipei City Council, and 234 schools of various levels.

A click-to-call service allowing people to make inquiries about services directly form the city's official website.

According to the China Post the inauguration ceremony was jointly presided over by Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou, and top executives of AnDar Technology. and TeleSynergy which is a leading provider of IP-enabled office communications solutions in Taiwan.

The system has been in use by civil servants for one month already and has resulted in some NT$200,000  (approx US$6,000) on telephone fees already. Now the public has been brought in on the act this is expected to save a total of NT$400,000 on phone call fees per month.

Users can just dial "1999" using traditional telephone lines to access the service.
