Nortel has entered the managed VoIP service market big time
with a global announcement that seems targeted at medium to large enterprise
looing for a solution to do it yourself IP Telephony.
It's all about lower cost, lower risk and less requirement
for businesses to have their own in-house VoIP skills.
The Network Managed Service offering is backed by the
promise of comprehensive 24 hour monitoring and control managed from Nortel's own
network operations centre in North Carolina.
What Nortel calls Proactive Voice Quality Management (PVQM)
provides round-the-clock IP telephony network operation and management, along
with the industry's first comprehensive, real-time support for VoIP quality of
service, says the company.
Nortel is further investing in its delivery capabilities with
the establishment of an Asia Network Management Centre in New Delhi, India.
The new centre joins the EMEA Centre in London
and the one in Raleigh
to provide Network Managed Services around the world.
"Ask companies what makes them hesitate to jump into voice
over IP and most will give you the same reasons - voice quality, cost, and lack
of skills to manage the transition," said Nigel Parnell, VP Network Managed
Services, Nortel.
"They want help dealing with these issues. They want
Business Made Simple. This service can help make that happen."
Though known for its equipment and services solutions, Nortel
already provides managed network services, most recently officially launching
its Metropolitan Ethernet Network in Australia.
