ISPhone is planning to widen its focus beyond Voice over IP by building a converged Next Generation Network offering a complete suite of Internet services, virtual private networks and ADSL services for small to medium enterprises.
The company has just announced it has appointed James Spenceley to the newly created position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and charged him with the task of building the network.

Spenceley was the network architect and internetworking infrastructure manager at COMindico, which was acquired by SOUL.

Spenceley will also be responsible for conducting training and development sessions for all of ISPhone's technical employees and engineers as well as provide ongoing skills support for all network staff.

With over a decade of experience in technical and network architect positions, Spenceley has specialised in designing and implementing large scale IP-backbone networks for a variety of companies. He regularly consults to Australian ISPs regarding the design and deployment of both voice and Internet networks.

He has also actively participated and spoken at regional Internet conferences and events including ICANN, the Asia Pacific Network Group (APNG) and APRICOT.

He designed, built and configured COMindico's IP network, one of the largest in the country, Spenceley is well positioned to help ISPhone expand its own network.

Earlier, Spenceley held a variety of network manager and engineering roles at companies such as Dot Communications, MailTV and i-Net Internet.

"In the last year, the number of ISPs and VoIP providers has grown astronomically. My goal is to move ISPhone to the next level, to become the leading NGN Business Telecommunications Provider," Spenceley said.

"SMEs have typically been the last segment of the market to reap the benefits of new communications technologies, particularly VoIP. I have spent many years developing and implementing new high-end applications and technologies and believe that my experience will support SME's growing demand for high quality business telecommunications services."

Gavin McDougal, Managing Director of ISPhone Australasia, said that the company was delighted to add Spenceley to its rapidly growing team.

"In the last year alone, we have experienced phenomenal growth from SMEs looking to deploy VoIP. However, this is still a fairly immature market. As we continue to grow, James's wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry will be invaluable to our commitment to deliver industry-leading innovations for our customers," he said.
