Santa Clara-based Packet Island has released a new in-line solution for monitoring and troubleshooting VoIP services for SMBs.

The solution is targeted at service providers looking for a way to keep an eye on customer installations.

Part of Packet Island's PacketSmart Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution which is all about pre-assessing SMB networks for VoIP readiness, and provide a continuous VoIP monitoring service to ensure carrier-grade service levels, the purpose-built micro-appliance works with the highly scalable PacketSmart SaaS platform which is hosted remote to the deployment.

The device itself is a small (4" x 4.5") box with an LCD display to simplify deployment troubleshooting. It can sit in front of a NAT firewall and offers VLAN support. The device will also work with mirrored switch ports.

In addition to the above new features and capabilities, the new micro-appliance includes several firmware enhancements to further simplify plug-and-play operation in a vast variety of SMB network environments, says the company.
