VoWLAN Handsets Boom By 2012: Juniper Print E-mail

Analysts are predicting Wi-Fi chip sales will grow astronomically over the next four years and now Juniper Research is predicting this growth will have a flow on effect to the VoIP market.
Juniper says that as Wi-Fi equipment revenues reach in excess of US$82 Billion by 2012 (North America will account for US$35 Billion of that) dual mode handsets will dominate.

That's US$82 Billion in VoIP over Wi-Fi equipment revenues. Not all WiFi equipment, just VoWLAN handsets. Juniper says that Europe, Middle East & Africa will account for US$23 Billion and Asia Pacific US$21 Billion.

Dual Mode Mobile Handsets (Cellular/VoIP over Wi-Fi) will dominate this market generating almost US$68 Billion in revenues by 2012, while Single Mode VoIP over Wi-Fi Handsets will see only a conservative uptake primarily due to high pricing, says the researcher. These devices certainly are pricey today, but a meagre US$1.5 Billion in revenues by 2012 seems a low estimate.

As we said that US$82 billion is mostly handsets with VoIP enabled Enterprise Access Points generating over US$5 Billion by 2012 and Enterprise WLAN Switch/Mobility Controllers (supporting VoIP) to reach almost US$8 Billion by 2012.

Report Author, Basharat Hamid Ashai, says that "the dual mode handset market will pick up much faster in the coming years than the single mode Wi-Fi handset sector. The handset market is moving to a stage where no one wants to carry two or three devices in their pocket, so the ability to have a single device for all calls is a compelling proposition. Most single mode VoIP overWi-Fi handset manufactures are actively either designing or planning to ship dual mode phones".

With all those VoIP capable handsets in the hands of consumers, Junipers other prediction - that Wireless Mesh Technologies for VoIP will become popular - makes a lot of sense. Currently Juniper admits these networks are in their infancy and are being used primarily for data applications, but "this market will be ripe for wireless VoIP" is a good bet and a "key move".
