Lucent Technologies plans to begin selling Polycom’s SIP SoundPoint IP desktop and SoundStation IP conference phones as part of a deal that will see the two companies collaborate on, well, collaboration.

As part of the deal the two will cooperatively work on system integration, interoperability testing and joint marketing initiatives to deliver video conferencing and collaboration solutions based around Lucent's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).

IMS is a service delivery platform for service providers introducing VoIP and multimedia services, blending voice, video and data and leverages a common applications infrastructure.

The deal covers sales to both enterprise and service provider solutions.

David Geary, vice president for Applications Solutions with Lucent's Network Solutions Group said, "Polycom offers one of the industry's most comprehensive selections of IMS-capable IP phones and video infrastructure, making it an excellent partner to further enhance Lucent's IMS solution."

Meanwhile, Hans Schwarz, senior vice president and chief systems architect for Polycom. Said, "Lucent's IMS expertise, growing VoIP momentum and extensive experience with next-generation network deployments make it an ideal choice as we extend our innovative new offerings to both new and existing customers."
