Building on the System i IP Telephony solution IBM and 3Com
delivered in November last year the two companies have announced they
will bring to market a unified communications system on the same
platform.
The SIP-system brings together 3Com's VCX voice solution with IBM's
System i hardware in a way that allows for easier integration with the
business applications in place argue the two.
The new unified mesaging solution
integrates IP telephony with email and messaging but brings this close
to core business process applications on a single platform.
The System i Integrated Collaboration
solution has a developer SDK from 3Com which provides the APIs to allow
integrators, developers and end-users to integrate telephony into their
business applications.
But there are out of the box
solutions such as the System i IP Telephony Contact Center which
enables departments with built-in features for call routing and screen
pops.
The System i IP Telephony can be
integrated with Lotus Sametime 7.5 so that users can make calls using
their IP desk phone by simply clicking on a contact within their
Sametime contact list.
This allows users to quickly connect
to co-workers and external associates using existing contact
information. Users can also view telephony presence through the
Sametime client, viewing whether colleagues are logged onto the client
and if they are on a call.
Finally, Unified Messaging brings
voicemails, faxes and email in a single, unified inbox. Voice messages
are received as attachments that can be opened and played on a laptop
or desktop computer using standard multimedia applications. Unified
messaging functionality is planned for both Lotus Domino and Microsoft
applications.
