Malware attacks targeting Skype users seem to be on the increase with the latest aparently dong little more than promoting websites.

Though it is not entirely clear what th eobjective of the worm is, according to security outfit F-Secure the worm is harvesting e-mail addresses and directing users to a number of sites which host advertising and may have other malicious software.

The attack spreads by sending a message with a malware link to all online friends in Skype's contact list using the Skype API. Before sending the message, it will set the infected Skype user's status to DND (Do Not Disturb). As a side effect, it will not actively notify the user of calls or messages.

The link leads to an executable that downloads the Trojan and shows a pic of a scantily clad woman sa cover for its illicit activity.

The link also directs users to at least eight Web sites with information about Africa. F-Secure says it's not clear what type of scam or harm those pages intend, but some of the sites have advertising on them, indicating that the objective may be as simply as a fraudulent pay-per-click advertising spamer.
