The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) has signed a
A$6million contract with two sister companies that will see a unified
voice, collaboration and messaging platform rolled out to all Foreign
Affairs workers in Australia and globally.
The successful contract was Australian listed entity UXC which owns
voice specialist Integ and security data networking outfit, BTC
Group. The solution will retain some aspects of the Department's
traditional phone systems without sacrificing functionality and access
to the same features for all of the department's 3,400 staff.
The solution was customised to meet DFAT's unique characteristics which
require the communications system to operate from a diversity of sites
locations and supporting infrastructures both in Australia and
overseas. The solution must also meet the organisational requirements
for security and local survivability.
Geoff Lord UXC Executive Chairman said: "We have delivered DFAT a
unique proposition that combines market leading voice technology,
specialist experience and a team of highly skilled voice, project and
integration resources.
"The solution meets DFAT's immediate needs, and delivers a robust
solution that will support the department's changing business
requirements into the future," said Lord.
"It is also important to recognise the decision by DFAT to engage UXC
was further proof of an Australian company being able to offer leading
solutions - with a global context , and be rewarded for doing so," he
said.
Equipment supplied by Alcatel-Lucent and SME voice specialist, Mitel,
will form aspects of the solution. The contract will see UXC roll-out
IP telephony to every DFAT user across Australia, while
internationally, DFAT will maintain its existing voice networking
system. However a unique aspect of the solution will mean that overseas
staff will share the same user interface and functionality, helping
streamline communication and improve productivity.
The functionality is designed to support DFAT's unique business
environment mobile workforce and global operations, said the company.
It includes Unified messaging that provides a single multimedia mailbox
for all message including voice email and fax accessible from anywhere
in the world. PC-based telephony capabilities also support mobility,
conference calls and access to a universal directory of DFAT staff.
Teamwork applications such as web and audio conferencing, document
sharing and collaboration also form part of the solution.
The project will be delivered By UXC business units Integ and BCT
Group. While Integ is a leading Australian integrator of secure voice
and data infrastructure it is sister company, BCT Group, which
specialises in the provision of IT and data management services to
Government intelligence and security agencies which already includes
DFAT.
"Security
has always been a considered a major issue when it comes to IP
telephony. The fact that UXC can deliver a unique combination of the
latest voice technology along with specialist security skills was a
significant benefit to DFAT and went a long way to building confidence
in the solution," said Lord.
