Pinnock Out: O'Donnell In at TIO Print E-mail

After 12 years at the head of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman's office, Commissioner John Pinnock, has decided that's enough and he will leave at the end of this month. The baton will be passed to Western Australian Ombudsman, Ms Deirdre O'Donnell.

O'Donnell  has been appointed as the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman and will succeed Pinnock on Tuesday 29 May. The TIO, in a statement concerning the announcement notes that in her role as the Western Australian Ombudsman, O'Donnel had significant powers of investigation, including those of a Royal Commission. The WA State Ombudsman's office also incorporated the functions of Energy Ombudsman.

Also on O'Donnell's resume are a long list of academic accomplishment's: Bachelor of Arts (1974), Diploma in Education (1975), Postgraduate Diploma in French Studies (1981), Master of Business Administration (1990) and a Master of Commercial Law (2004) from University of Melbourne School of Law.

Significantly however, prior to her role in Western Australia, O'Donnell was the Deputy Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman. She has extensive experience in the telecommunications industry, working in senior positions for service providers and the industry regulator.

Tony Staley, the Chairman of the TIO Council, and John Rohan, Chairman of the TIO Board, expressed their congratulations to O'Donnell and paid tribute to the outgoing Chairman for his "outstanding contribution".

O'Donnell said she was looking forward to the challenge of improving outcomes for telecommunications consumers while at the same time helping to increase the standard of complaint resolution within the industry.

"Telecommunications is one of our most dynamic industries and that rate of change brings significant challenges for providers and consumers alike," she said.

"The TIO has proved that it has an important part to play in the relationship between consumers and the industry. I am looking forward to ensuring that theTIO maintains its high standard of professionalism."
