Sydney, June 7th 2007 - Mitel, the trusted provider
of IP communications solutions, has today announced that the NSW
institute of Sport (NSWIS) has implemented a Mitel IP telephony and
presence awareness solution for their Sydney Olympic Park site.
Greg Baxter, Manager of ICT for the NSW
Institute of Sport commented, "Our goal is to help athletes prepare
for competition. We currently support 700 athletes across 23 sports.
Our high tech coaching methods help athletes to reach their peak
performance, and for many, that will mean the chance to compete at
the Olympics."
In 2006, the NSW Institute of Sport
moved their 100 employees into new office space at Sydney Olympic
Park. Most of the employees work at a central administration office,
with small teams working in office spaces embedded within the various
Olympic Park sporting facilities.
The large campus environment presents
significant challenges, both in delivering communications services,
and achieving the flexibility required to handle frequent
reconfigurations. The communications system also needs to support the
delivery of advanced sports performance analysis and coaching tools,
to coaches and athletes training at sporting facilities.
The NSW Institute of Sport selected a
Mitel 3300 ICP solution to handle the communication needs for their
entire campus. Located at their central administration office, a
single Mitel 3300 unit delivers voice services across the NSW
Institute of Sport's various Olympic Park offices.
Gigabit Ethernet and wireless LAN
solutions from HP ProCurve have been deployed as part of the
solution. Fast Ethernet fibre links connect the central office to
several sporting facilities at Olympic Park, with Wireless LAN
technology allowing employees to easily access centrally stored
sports performance data.
The Mitel IP telephony solution has
also been completely integrated with Microsoft Live Communications
Server, to deliver sophisticated voice and unified messaging services
across the campus. The campus wide solution was designed and
installed by Essential Data and Voice, a Mitel Platinum accredited
systems integration partner.
Greg Baxter continued, "We looked at
voice solutions from five major vendors before deciding on Mitel.
Many of the solutions we considered looked good at first glance, but
had ridiculously high ongoing fees. Mitel's solution offered us the
best value, with reasonable ongoing support costs, and easy to use
administration tools."
Helping athletes to improve their
performance is of paramount importance to the Institute. Coaching
staff are provided with sophisticated data capture and analysis
tools. Instead of disrupting athlete training to analyse performance,
coaches bring the technology to the athlete. The Mitel solution makes
it easier for coaches to work effectively while they are trackside at
the athletics centre, or at other key sporting venues at Olympic
Park.
The phone system is tightly integrated
with Microsoft Exchange email messaging and calendar services. This
allows employees to have a single unified inbox for all of their
voice messages, emails and faxes. The entire system is also presence
aware, which allows any employee to immediately know how to best
reach someone, regardless of where they are within the enormous
campus.
Greg Baxter commented further, "Our
coaches work across many of the Olympic Park sporting venues, so we
really need to make it easy for them to stay in touch. By combining
Mitel's IP telephony solution with Microsoft Live Communications
Server, our computers automatically divert phones whenever an
employee steps away from their desk. We can instantly see presence
information, so you can tell if someone is busy on the phone, even
when they are sitting poolside at the aquatic centre. Mitel's IP
telephony solution has given us a lot of flexibility, and made it
easier for us to support visiting athletes and their coaches."
Gwilym Funnell, Managing Director of
Mitel Australia commented, "Sitting your team members close
together in an office used to be the best way to share information
and work effectively. With presence awareness technology, instant
messaging and automated call routing, you can unchain your employees
from their desks, while achieving high levels of teamwork and
performance."
