Skype Boasts 126 Million Downloads Print E-mail

VoIP darling Skype recently reached a new download milestone when it announced more than 126 million copies of its softphone had been downloaded. However, the impressive number masks the true use of the service.

Since the last time Skype made a fuss about it in mid-April, the company has served an additional 26 million downloads of its Internet telephony application. Exponential growth certainly, but a closer look at Skype’s figures add a little perspective to the company’s hype.
Far from 126 million users, the company now has more than 35 million registered users. However, only 1.2 million people are now using SkypeOut which allows them to make calls outside the peer-to-peer network. There is no way to gauge how many of these registered users are active.
The company announced it had reached the one million mark for SkypeOut users on March 11 this year indicating a growth rate of around 1850 new SkypeOut users per day, far less than the 150,000 ‘users’ the company boasts.
The beta release of Skype occurred on 29 August 2003.
