Skype accessories have been all the rage over the last 12 months, but there's another Voice over Instant Messaging platform that's been sadly ignored.

While Google can hardly claim to have turned the broadband telephony world ablaze with its GoogleTalk voice capable instant messager, some user will be pleased to hear that Wistron NeWeb, a Taiwan-based manufacturer that makes (among everything else) Wi-Fi Skype phones.

Wistron is an OEM so you wouldn't normally know you're getting one of their phones, they manufacturer for other companies that attach their own brand to the phone.

With shipments of Skype Wi-Fi phones reaching 20,000-30,000 units a month, this story by DigiTimes suggests company insiders leaked the plans for a GoogleTalk Wi-Fi phone.

The report also says the company has stepped up its efforts to boost sales of its SIP-based Wi-Fi phones for the second half of this year. Wistron has identified the telecoms sector as a potential channel to market rather than focusing on brand name network and VoIP hardware vendors as it has in the past.

The model could play out similar to Taiwan-based services providers who offer the Wi-Fi SIP phones (possibly with a consumer broadband wireless gateway) as part of a service subscription deal.
