The US VoIP
business slowed in the second quarter of 2007, says IDC's Channel
Panel, but not as much as other technology areas that saw the growth of
server and PCs. Storage another area historically experiencing good
growth didn't do so bad either.
According to the quarterly survey, which asks technology resellers how
their business is going, reports of increased business were in decline
while reports
of decreasing business were on the upswing indicating the heat is
coming out of the market.
Storage hardware performed the best out of five categories with the
majority of resellers indicating their
business stayed the same when compared to the first quarter. Storage
software, however declined as what IDC describes as a spike in the
first
quarter. The storage software sector returned to levels comparable to
the
second half of 2006, according to the survey.
However, the number of suppliers reporting increased
business in the server sector fell to its lowest rate in a year with
reports of decreased business holding steady. HP and Sun had the
greatest number of partners (36%)
seeing increased business. In contrast, Dell had the biggest drop-off
in
partners reporting increased business and IBM had the highest
percentage of
partners experiencing decreased business, according to IDC.
PC sales did not fair so well with more businesses (8.3%) experiencing
a sales slow down in the second quarter. Toshiba enjoyed good
results in the first quarter with more than 30% of partners seeing
increased
business, but Acer's partners did the worst going off the boil after
four solid quarters of increasing business.
In the Voice business more resellers also reported decreased business with less reporting increases over the
first quarter. However, incongruously voice still had the highest overall percentage of partners reporting increased
business of any product segment.
Cisco partners again had the strongest results
in the segment, but these gains were not on par with those of the first
quarter.
