Truphone
has announced a new service for users outside the UK and USA called,
Truphone Out+. The new feature enables VoIP calls using the company's
-priced calls with your existing mobile phone number by pre-selecting Truphone as your default carrier.
Designed to grab some service revenues from countries where Truphone does not yet provide local mobile numbers, Truphone
Out+ gives you access to the company's network infrastructure without
having to assign you a number, which the company cannot outside the US
and UK yet.
Truphone calls are routed via Wi-Fi (or 3G if you dare) using Session Initiation Protocol
(SIP). The Truphone servers automatically recognise if
the telephone number being called is already linked to a Truphone
account, in which case a free
Truphone-to-Truphone call is set up if
the destination user is online. If not the call is switched onto the
regular mobile or PSTN services in the country you are calling.
Selection
of Truphone as your default carrier is achieved transparently, but you
can elect to use regular GSM to place the call at any time.
Because Truphone Out+
doesn't assign you a local number, your existing phone number is
displayed as the 'caller identification' (Caller ID). Ultimately, the
company hopes to migrate users to their own numbers in the future.
"Truphone
Out+ will encourage access to the Truphone service from countries where
we have not yet introduced local number ranges. At a stroke we have
massively increased the number of people who can access and benefit
from the Truphone service," said James Tagg, Truphone's chief executive officer.
The Truphone software client is available for download to work with a number of Nokia E-series and N-series phones.
The latest version of the phone introduced Truphone InTones which allow users to choose from a
selection of nine ringtones you can hear when making a call. The choice of InTones is: Rock, Jazz, Bluegrass, Hip-hop, Ska, Disco, Euro house, Standard (plain 'ring-ring'), Truphone.
The company also
recently sigfned a deal with eXpansys to pre-install its software on
phones sold in a range of countries including UK, USA, Eire, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong and Australia.
Chris Isaacs, Truphone's business development director, said "It
will be especially good news in markets such as the USA where handsets
are routinely locked down by the operators; now, customers there that
buy unlocked handsets from Mobile Planet [eXpansys' online store in for
USA] will have the opportunity to try VoIP as it's meant to be."
