Whitelabel VoIP service provider, Freshtel has accepted an upfront licence fee from its UK partner Tesco, for the rights to sell the company's new converged mobile network solution in the New Year.

The system, which has been under development for over a year allows IP Telephony from Nokia mobile phones using either 3G or WiFi and is offered as part of Freshtel's whitelabel service to major UK retailer, Tesco.

Rhonda O'Donnell, CEO of Freshtel claims the converged solution is the first fully integrated Internet Telephony solution and is unique to any other mobile VoIP solution on the market (ignoring the fact that Freshtel's offering is not yet on the market).

Freshtel announced in early September last year that it had successfully concluded internal trials of the technology. While no definitive timeframe was announced then or now, Freshtel says it is "entering the final stages of commercialisation" of the technology.

The software will provide integrated presence and seamless switching between Internet-based messaging and SMS on the traditional network. Properly equipped mobile phones will be able to automatically choose whether to use the standard mobile network or available WiFi connections to place a call, says the copmany.

"The key point of difference is that Freshtel has integrated the converged mobility solution with our White Label product allowing partners to offer a full phone service from registration to credit top-up. This stand alone application automatically configures the mobile handset to place a call over the Freshtel network when WiFi is available, and what's more this can be done with the convenience of the users existing mobile phone number.

"The technology introduces really exciting, user friendly features to mobile Internet Telephony. Our aim is to make Internet telephony more accessible and desirable and to cater to the lifestyles of our customers," O'Donnell said.

Tesco is a significant partner to Freshtel being the company's first big International client and has made significant investments in Freshtel earning it a seat on the ASX-listed company's board.

At launch the software will be compatible with Nokia N95, N80 and E65 WiFi enabled phones.
