-The choice for Internet chatting without wires has so far been quite
limited with cordless DECT devices, expensive WiFi handsets, USB phones
or wired headsets the only real alternatives in the mid-price range.
But now Logitech
has gone a significant way toward resolving the long standing problem
of being tied to your PC when using a softphone announcing a new
wireless headset that lets you go hands free without the wires.
Unveiling
the company's first wireless stereo headset for VoIP calling,
the company claimed the 2.4 GHz wireless technology used in the headset
includes an advanced algorithm that minimises interference in busy
wireless environments. The headset works with a range of "Internet
calling applications" such as Skype, Windows Live, Yahoo!, Google Talk
and AIM.
But the headset isn't restricted to Internet calling, the ClearChat
PC Wireless headset provides high-performance audio and a comfortable
design that make it ideal for listening to music, watching movies or
playing games on the PC.
The
headset is bundled with a USB
transmitter which allows the user to stray up to 10 metres from their
PC, but it's not Bluetooth. There's no software or pairing required and
the device should just plug and play according to Logitech. Using the
2.4GHz wireless the headset delivers "crisp, uncompressed stereo audio"
and will work with either PC or Mac.
"More
and more people are making voice calls over the Internet, but until
now, they have had to choose between wired headsets that keep them
tethered to their PCs or wireless headsets that offer poor audio and
voice quality," said Gina Clark, general manager and vice president
of Logitech's Internet Communications business unit. "With the Logitech
ClearChat
PC Wireless headset, people can make a PC call while grabbing a snack,
sitting on the couch or leaning back in their chair - PC calling has
never been so convenient and never sounded so good."
According to a company statement the ClearChat
PC Wireless has "proprietary laser-tuned audio drivers" and a
noise-cancelling microphone on a flexible boom. Volume and microphone
mute controls are located on the right earpiece and the microphone
automatically mutes when it is moved to the upright position. The
microphone also glows red when it's muted so that you know it's turned
off.
You will have time to save up for the suggested retail
price of A$149.95 as the headset will not appear in Australia until the
end of April.
