Telecommunications provider AAPT, part of the Telecom New Zealand Group, has switched on to a VoIP solution for its Sydney offices.

About 800 staff from five Sydney locations were being re-located to new premises in Sydney's CBD, offering a perfect opportunity to switch off the old PABXs.

In total 1,700 the company’s staff will get access to the new IP communication infrastructure delivering VoIP, unified messaging, voicemail to email services and interstate extension dialling.

The system uses Polycom’s top of the range SoundPoint IP 600 handsets with six-lines, high quality hands-free voice and the ability to deliver converged applications right to the business desktop. The system allows staff to log and manage their own calls, dial or answer the phone from their desktop and obtain caller information from the company directory in Outlook.

Steve McGrory, Marketing Solutions Manager, AAPT said the company needed to practice what it preaches, “particularly when it comes to new Internet Protocol platforms”.

“We chose Polycom SoundPoint IP 600 phones because they delivered superior voice quality, advanced desktop call management and better compatibility and integration with AAPT’s hosted voice systems. With the Polycom IP handsets, we will be able to seamlessly link up and reduce call costs between our new Sydney office and operations in Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, using our IP network for all voice, Internet and data communications,” McGrory said.

The system was implemented in a two week timeframe. AAPT is now implementing stage two of the project over the next three to four months, upgrading desktops and phone systems across the entire national AAPT network.

The company is also looking at the integrating a local wireless network in the offices, wireless IP phones and the introduction of video conferencing technology in the future.
