Broadband phone company engin has done a deal with a private sector support program to offer defence personnel a cost effective way to keep in contact with family and friends around the country and around the world.

The Connecting the Community Programme (CTCP) delivers welfare support and communications infrastructure to communities from all corners of Australia.

Under the wholesale agreement and through CTCP’s ‘Stand-to’ project, engin will allow Australian army, navy and air force troops in bases across Australia to stay in contact with colleagues, friends and family locally, nationally and abroad using its broadband telephony call rates and VoIP technology.

All services supplied to the defence personnel through the ‘Project Stand-to’, such as engin’s VoIP technology, are vetted by welfare organisations prior to their release to market to ensure competitive pricing, quality of supply, and relevance to today’s defence personnel. A variety of broadband communications technologies are expected to be used to deliver the VoIP services to the defence personnel.

“engin is especially proud to be supporting Australia’s defence forces through our partnership with Connecting the Community Programme and the Everyman’s Welfare Service,” said Ilkka Tales, CEO, engin.  “This takes us a step further in our commitment to provide the whole of Australia the chance to enjoy massive savings on phone bills while harnessing the full potential of the Internet.

“With engin’s low cost untimed, anytime call rates we are bringing Australia’s service men and women closer together – regardless of whether they are based in the far reaches of the world or elsewhere in Australia. At the same time, we are challenging the outdated concept of charging people a timed call because they live a long way from someone else.”

Commenting on the agreement, Bob Rogers, Chief Commissioner, Everyman’s Welfare Service said, “By working closely with engin and Connecting the Community Programme, we are able to offer our personnel the latest communications technology allowing them to stay in contact at low cost.”

“Corporate Australia has stepped up to the plate and we commend companies such as engin on their efforts in providing quality services for Australian troops,” said Nathan Richards, General Manager – Project Stand-to. “Not only will this provide a high quality and low cost communication service but profits raised from the supply of this service will be channeled directly back to the defence forces via the philanthropic welfare services.”
