SIP branded IP telephony is proving a winner with European callers.

VoIP services provided by ISPs have recently taken the lead in Europe’s internet telephony industry, with a 51.2% market share.

The ISP offerings have now eclipsed the previous leader, Skype and are well ahead of relative newcomer to Europe, Vonage.

Skype now holds a share of 45% share of the total VoIP minutes, while Vonage has less than 1%.

The story suggests that a similar situation is taking shape in the US where cable companies and ISPs account for 53% of all VoIP minutes collectively, though Vonage comes in at 21.7% share alone and Skype commands 14.4% of the market.

The ability by providers to bundle VoIP services with internet access and cable TV is proving to be an attractive, single bill proposition for consumers because customers are much more likely to try a service if it’s provided by a company that they already deal with and trust, says the story.
