A recent survey in the US has highlighted the potential of VoWLAN/Cellular Combo Phones, with nearly 85% of respondents at least somewhat interested. Free local calling and better in-building coverage were seen to be the key drivers.
The research by In-Stat looked into the level of interest in the prospect of combined WiFi and mobile technologies to deliver mobile VoIP in the consumer market.
The survey gives some credence to the ability of cellular carriers to potentially displace wire-line carriers, explained an In-Stat analyst, Allen Nogee. "With results like this, it's very easy to see why [US] carriers are very actively working to get the VoWLAN/Cellular phone concept deployed," he said. "Cellular carriers are also excited about the prospects of VoWLAN/Cellular handsets because the devices allow them to effectively compete with wireline carriers by providing communications services to enterprise, small business, and home customers via a route other than cellular." The report also reveals that PBX-type features and the need to only carry one phone received very positive responses, but nowhere near as high as the prospect of unlimited local calls and better in-building coverage. The survey of 860 cellular phone users also includes a worldwide forecast for VoWLAN/Cellular handsets through 2010. Related news items Newer news items
