Add Primus to the list of new VoIP service providers promoting their networks to the Australian business and retail community.

Primus may stand out though, as the first of the big carriers to add broadband telephony to its product list.

Primus Telecom’s new TalkBroadband service will launch with 10 cents un-timed national calls and overseas calls priced from 2.7 cents per minute.

Primus Telecom Managing Director Greg Wilson said the introduction of TalkBroadband was a landmark step in the evolution of the organisation’s services in Australia. “Primus is the first major telecommunications company in Australia to release a phone service using the Internet to the residential market.

“I am very confident that, with the experience and the success we have seen with our Lingo VoIP service in the US market, we have been able to develop a premium grade product which is well suited to the Australian market and which delivers exceptional value,” he said.

TalkBroadband is modelled on Primus’ highly US phone service, Lingo. Primus Telecom is Australia’s fourth largest fixed-line telecommunications carrier and operates its own fibre optic network in the five major capitals with facilities in 66 sites across the country. Global connectivity is provided through an extensive voice, IP, wireless and ATM network operated by its NASDAQ–listed parent, Primus Telecommunications Group.

Though Wilson is all talk about the residential market, TalkBroadband will also be pitched at small and medium businesses.

There are three plans: a Starter Plan for $9.95 a month gives access to the service at the above call rates while a Family Plan costs $19.95 and comes with 100 included free local and national calls and 200 free minutes of international talk time to selected countries. The Premium Plan costs $29.95 a month and comes with 200 free local and national calls and 400 minutes of free talk time to the same list of 15 overseas destinations.
